FIA WTCR, MACAU, Round 10 : Ma Qing Hua

FIA WTCR, Macau, Round 10 : Ma Qing Hua returns to Boutsen Ginion Racing for Macau WTCR finale

Ma Qing Hua will return to our team for the final round of the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup at the fabled Macau street circuit on November 17-18.

The 30-year-old from Shanghai will partner Tom Coronel in the Honda Civic Type R TCR that he already raced at the Chinese events at Ningbo and Wuhan earlier in the Autumn.

He takes the place of Tiago Monteiro, who made his comeback to racing after a 14-month injury layoff, but who will not race at Macau as he uses the winter to prepare for a full-time comeback in 2019.

Ma performed impressively at Ningbo and Wuhan; recording a best result of seventh at the latter event.

He competed in the Macau Guia Races on a one-off basis last year and set the fastest lap of the Main Race. He is also a two-time winner in WTCR’s predecessor, the FIA World Touring Car Championship,  a Formula 1 Reserve Driver and a GP2, Formula E and World Rallycross competitor.

Ma Qing Hua said: "I am very happy to return to the WTCR and to race the Honda Civic Type R TCR again. Boutsen Ginion Racing are a strong team and made me feel very welcome in the events I did in China. Having been through that familiarisation period will help me get up-to-speed much more quickly at Macau, as will the fact that this is the first track I’ll have raced the car at this year at which I have prior experience. Together we’ve already finished in the top 10 so the aim is to have a strong weekend and continue the progress shown in Ningbo and Wuhan.”

Olivia Boutsen, Team Manager, said: "We’re very happy to welcome Ma Qing Hua back into the team for Macau. Despite being unfamiliar with us, the car and the circuits in China, he settled in extremely well and did a very good job to show top-10 pace everywhere and take a well-deserved seventh place in Wuhan. This is our first time racing on the streets of Macau, so having two drivers in Ma and Tom who know the circuit, will be a big help to us. Our aim is to use this to finish the season on a high.”

FIA WTCR, SUZUKA, Round 9 : driver's quotes

Results Race 3 :

  • P11 : Tiago Monteiro
  • P14 : Tom Coronel

Tiago Monteiro, back on track, after 14 months of absence ..

Tiago Monteiro : "“What a weekend! I came here without any targets set publicly, but privately I needed to prove I could be competitive straight away. The team have been fantastic in improving the car from day to day and I genuinely think that if this had been a normal weekend, with second qualifying on the same day as Races Two and Three, I could have got into the top 10 on the grid. It’s felt amazing to be back all weekend and I’m very pleased with how everything’s gone. It’s a great starting point for 2019.”

Tom Coronel :“We made some good progress through the weekend and you can see the evidence of this from the race results. I’m quite happy with the handling and I have more confidence to push than in previous weekends. We do still need to improve in qualifying. This championship is so tight that even a small gain in time can put you many positions further up on the grid. If I’d started on the seventh row – which could have been possible without the red flag in qualifying – I think the races would have been even better.

FIA WTCR, Suzuka, Japan, Round 9: Race 1
1st race of the weekend, this Saturday afternoon, here in Japan at the Suzuka circuit, where Tom Coronel has more fans than Zandvoort.
A strange feeling for Tiago Monteiro after his 14 months of absence. But after a few moments, Tiago finds all his automatisms.
As often, however, a lack of power for our 2 Honda, and at the end of the race, a fifteenth and seventeenth position.

Result : Race 1:
  • P15: Tiago Monteiro
  • P17: Tom Coronel
